When's the last time we were happy at the end of the Oscars? The Return of the King year, for our purposes, doesn't count, on account of being a sure thing from the opening curtain.
This? Pan's Labyrinth, West Bank Story, An Inconvenient Truth, The Departed? Snakes on a Plane interpretive dance? SCORSESE?!? All the awesomer for being mostly totally unexpected.
Not a night without disappointments, but those can wait. For now, we raise a glass to praise old Marty and curse Universal, then pour it out for Bobby. Sweet dreams.
I have mixed feelings about the Scorcese-Oscar love. Not that he won, but this feels like the Academy finally gave him a break. I haven't seen The Departed yet, but is it as good as Taxi Driver/Raging Bull/Goodfellas? Probably not though my opinion may change. And it's sad that this has to happen sometimes (see: Al Pacino w/ Scent of a Woman). But I guess I should get over my feelings and be happy for a great director.
Posted by: SVPIMH at February 26, 2007 02:17 PMWay to pass judgment on a fantastic film you haven't even seen. (H, is this a theme this week or what?) You're right, dude. I'm sure Scorsese would much rather wait another few years. That's the most ludicrous thing I've read this week.
Posted by: Shea at February 27, 2007 07:29 AMThis isn't about Scorcese's recation, he's going to be happy no matter which of his films wins. What I'm talking about is how I dislike these situations, where the award is more a celebration of his career rather than about the actual film.
Does it really make up for the fact that some of his films that are among the greatest of all time got passed over? I don't think so.
So I'm saying that I'm slightly conflicted, but that's just me. Maybe this is a problem with the process and the Academy and I'm voicing an opinion that doesn't matter. But I'm happy for Marty and he deserved it.
(Sorry for the length of this comment)
Posted by: SVPIMH at February 27, 2007 02:13 PMI just bristle at the implication that The Departed's not the best of the field of five, especially when, oh, you haven't SEEN IT.
Posted by: Stella at February 27, 2007 02:55 PMTouch?, I will see it and I'm not saying that it didn't deserve the Oscar (it certainly did, as far as I can see) but more my feelins about about Scorcese's legacy. I realize that I do need to see it but unless it's absolutely transcendent, it most likely won't surpass Goodfellas (the best Scorcese film in my estimation).
So there you go.
