I was starting to wonder why I hadn't been paid since December 14th. Guess who signs my checks?
[Update: These are the primary questions right now. So far, no answers. But our business dinner tomorrow night should have some lively conversation!]
Ouch.
Posted by: OPS at January 8, 2008 05:02 PMlordy hon, ain't nobody sadder to hear you have to go through this than me. i ain't been quite in a spot like this but as one who has been well and truly screwed by the powers-that-be in my time, i certainly can sympathize. hang tough, get used to ramen noodles and look at it as an opportunity to hone your cussin' skills for next year's bama game.
Posted by: kleph at January 8, 2008 05:55 PMThe word is that we will have a new company to give us our money "soon"...but no one seems to know quite when that's going to be. It's weird to worry about paying NEXT month's rent, but with the turnaround time at these places, it's totally possible.
Posted by: Holly at January 8, 2008 06:01 PMthe tax filing question is a real good one. that's gonna be a huge headache even when you get the money flowing again.
Posted by: kleph at January 8, 2008 06:22 PMEmergency Bankruptcy?!?! Someone went waaaaay over budget on the New Fiscal Year's Eve Party.
(You really haven't lived until you've used spray icing to stencil "Happy Fiscal New Year" onto a pan of brownies, by the way.)
Oof, Holly. That sucks.
Posted by: The Great Barstoolio at January 8, 2008 07:06 PMreally!?!! and here i thought my life felt empty because i skipped my senior prom.
Posted by: kleph at January 8, 2008 07:17 PM@kleph--This is why we bribe Daddy's accountant yearly with football tickets to do my taxes, too...but yes. The fun is just starting.
Posted by: Holly at January 8, 2008 07:18 PMhah! i pay my accountant in gumbo and calendars. you better believe that keeps em loyal.
yeah, this smelled like embezzlement from the first snarkalicious post on defamer. the story in variety paints an even clearer picture.
Posted by: kleph at January 8, 2008 08:37 PMWell that sucks. Who could have imagined that outsourcing could go wrong? Hopefully you will be paid soon.
As for taxes: I would imagine that if your W2 is delayed, you should be able to file for an extension up until April 15. I had an issue last year with a non-work-related form not arriving in time, so I took the extension and filed in October.
Good luck.
Posted by: DC Trojan at January 8, 2008 10:57 PMMmmm....financial malfeasance by the bigs, trickling its way down. I suggest the many paid by said company ought to rise up and slay the rot on top.
At least in my industry they give you the courtesy of telling you they're going to fuck you over instead of finding out on the interwebs.
Posted by: Signal to Noise at January 9, 2008 02:12 AMsome encouraging news from the Los Angeles Times story:
"Jeff Begun, an Axium vice president, said payrolls the company had been processing were being moved to competitors Cast & Crew Entertainment Services and Entertainment Partners."
and the NY Daily News has the most new info on the cause of the mess:
"The company's biggest secured lender, Golden Tree Asset Management, a $14 billion New York hedge fund, made the decision to pull the plug... Sources close to the company blamed an acquisition binge for Axium's financial woes but said the writers' strike was the tipping point."
and, STN, i don't think the people affected will need to make the effort (theyve probably got better things to worry about anyway atm) most likely, the la county district atty and the calif atty general will be very interested in this case very soon.
these dumbasses seem to have forgotten that the state is run by a governor who has LOTS of friends in the film industry who he probably wants to keep very happy due to his campaign obligations.
and, for a town being very discreet in discussing a labor dispute that's overshadowing he entire industry, folks are gonna be very happy to have a son-of-a-bitch to kick around for awhile.
Posted by: kleph at January 9, 2008 05:25 AMof course, if you are really pissed at the guy, just pop over to this website that lists campaign contributions by donor (hey look! $26,500 to the republican national committee. wanna bet their checks didn't bounce?) and look at the actual filing. that gives you an address to start with...
Posted by: kleph at January 9, 2008 05:59 AMTSW posted those addresses in the Defamer thread last night. Hee!
Posted by: Holly at January 9, 2008 07:43 AMkleph - you're right; I'd say Attorney General Moonbeam gets involved in about two weeks.
While you are correct about der Gropenfuhrer's friends, he's probably too busy trying to push around the legislature for more budget power right now -- however, this won't escape his notice. (Yes, I spent yesterday obsessed about the State of the State and the NH primary. Why do you ask?)
Posted by: Signal to Noise at January 9, 2008 09:09 AMit still seems politically expedient. does he take a larger role in the strike knowing he'll either piss off the studio bosses that give him money or public opinion which, so far, has supported the writers? or does he huff and puff at a pair of white-collar criminals who everyone is pissed at?
not too tough a call, methinks.
but, if media reports to date are true, the ball is in the feds court and they aren't known for fucking around. ask mr vick about that.
also, the googlenews search pulled up an interesting press release from a month ago involving these guys. i'm not well versed enough in the situation to scry the details but what is clear is that there was a sizeable mass of cash floating around last year involving these clowns.
