Hedging:

Holly: I can't believe how many Patriots' opponents picks we've seen this season (not counting mine, which are always constructed from grade-A Colombian spite). In the midst of New England's darlinghood, is this simply wishful thinking? A harbinger of already emerging backlash? Or are the Giants really onto something? Here's hoping for the latter, but I'm in this to win. Belichick (little known fact: means "prettybird") would be proud. And then he'd step in to give me a gruff handshake and I'd punch him in the throat. S'go, Giants!!
Spawn Because, please?
Jef: I guess picking Damon Wayans to ride out onto the field on a horse and throw a football at the president to stop him from being assassinated goes without saying, but I'll stick with the Giants.
JHC: "The soil of a man's heart is stonier... a man grows what he can, and he tends it." - Jud Crandall
Eli's pedigree and abilities were never questioned; his heart was. I can't point to anything specifically, but over the course of the season, he's led the Giants to 10 consecutive road wins and found his heart in the process. The Giants are the perfect team to beat New England - they control the clock with Jacobs, they have a game-breaking WR in Plaxy, and Reggie, Barry, Osi and Mike will punish pretty boy just for spite. This game will be a grinder, with the Giants winning - straight up.
Barstoolio: Against all my hopes and dreams I pick New England. The collective media fellatio will kill us all.
S2N: I've exhausted every possibility to find a way NOT to pick New England, and I can't do it. Better climate, two weeks of prep time for Coach Hobo, better skill position players. The only way the Giants have a shot is if they can sack the Fashion Model early and often. I don't see it happening. At least the game will be close, I think. Monday's forecast for the Boston area shows a smug front rolling through.

is this simply wishful thinking?

Yes. But it's also how I ended up with a score of 2. I'd rather go out right and sad than wrong and sad.

Go Giants!

I am honestly disgusted that you're picking New England. It genuinely upsets me.

Let's please read what I wrote under "hedging" and try to distinguish between "hoping a particular team will win" and "picking a particular team in order to win the pool". The idea that I will be overjoyed with a Pats win is ludicrous.

I don't have to like your pick, and I don't. But I do love you. And I have something important to tell you as soon as my phone is done charging.

P.S. Giants? Prove me wrong. Belichick's getting interviewed on ESPN and the lights glaring off all the Carmex he's slathered on do nothing to distract me from what looks like a wicked herpes flare-up on his mouth. His crushing defeat is the only way today can get better.

I SAW THAT TOO. I think Mrs. Pillsbury might need to get tested.

Posted by: j at February 3, 2008 09:38 AM

What makes you think he got it from his wife?

And I turned to ESPN2 for relief and they're talking about SB 2002, and how a team called "The Patriots" winning healed the wounds of 9/11. I AM NOT JOKING.

Yes, WWL. Because a team from Boston winning the biggest sporting event of the year is bound to make New Yorkers smile real pretty. And thanks to the Saints' playoff run last year all displaced residents of New Orleans now have homes.

Also, thanks for taking a home game away from the Saints, NFL. That's a big help.

Oh, no. I'm at the bar and seated directly across from a table of Pats and Michigan jerseys. My Colts hoodie and Tennessee handbag are spoiling for a (knife) fight. Developing...

How did we ever have Super Bowls without Belichick and Brady? Thinking about it just makes me sad... and scared.

Posted by: jhc at February 3, 2008 02:34 PM

Being wrong feels pretty good.

Posted by: Holly at February 3, 2008 07:19 PM

I don't understand...the number after the Giants' name is bigger than the one after the Patriots'. How did the NFL allow that?

Posted by: Alex at February 3, 2008 08:46 PM

Rarely am I so pleased to be so wrong.

Especially when that $50 I put on the Giants gets reinvested.

Posted by: Signal to Noise at February 3, 2008 09:16 PM

I've never so enjoyed a game in which I had no rooting (or money) interest. My hedging was based on knowledge but my joy at the Pats choke was all spite. Best of both worlds, I suppose.

Posted by: jhc at February 3, 2008 09:41 PM

So... who's thinking about dropping everything, packing a duffel bag, and shipping out to campaign for Jeremy Shockey for Super Tuesday?

It's destiny at this point, right?
